the spring begins with the first rainstorm is a generative piece of art that lives solely on the Ethereum blockchain. Each work is generated by the code in accordance with the Artist’s guidance - selecting the patterning, coloration, arrangement, alignment, portals, overlays and filters.

The work started with its visual patterning, a patterning meant to be devoid of the human hand and referential to patterns of the environment. The process for creating this patterning is best explained by this video, which shows where it was first discovered:

Once the Earth defined the patterning, Sternberg selected eleven pattern options:

a boisterous stream in a boulder choked channel - a fairyland created out of the commonest fern-stuff - a tenuous grip on arctic dreams - algae exploration - crop circles -here I could stay tethered forever- would i could understand them - not their sky vortex - the many have come now - to live is the rarest thing in the world- valley dreams

These patterns were programmed to generate in a variety of manners, such as rotating, mirroring, segmenting and inverting.

The patterning next needed to be accompanied by specific dialogues of coloration and application.

Sternberg selected 311 specific color options that covered the spectrum of colors but also tonally interacted well together. These colors were then apportioned in accordance with fourteen placement possibilities.

Next was ribboning, reminiscent of the wind, it appears in breezes, gusts or not at all.

Then came the possibility of portals to another dimension.

Sometimes, the pattern would shift into a patchwork, multiplying on itself.

Last was merging the patterning with its numerous compositional, filter and layer possibilities to the coloration features, ribboning and portals…

And, the spring comes with the first rainstorm was off into the world…
